Scarcity During Experimentation, Abundance During Scaling [mini post]

The title was my comment on Hadley’s post below. For most founders my advice is to be tight with capital pre PMF. Not just because you’ll need the money ($$ are oxygen), but because most important (and sustainable) learnings you’ll make during this period are best done if you can’t ‘solve’ them with dollars. Don’t underprice a product just to find market pull — that might mean your customer’s don’t value what you’re solving for them. Don’t do paid marketing just to force an up and to the right curve without knowing your retention and unit economics. Don’t overpay (in cash) new team members — figure out how to attract true believers to the team [tbc, fair wages plus generous equity]. And so on….

Then once you’re ready, don’t be afraid to move faster and use capital to do so.
